Emlite EMGSM1-MID Approved Single Phase 100A cw Modem and SIM Card and External Aerial

Designed specifically for the collection of micro-generation metering data, EMGSM1 provides remote collection of meter readings especially generation metering of wind, solar and any other renewable energy installations. This meter is also suitable for single phase supply remote metering. The meter is of modular construction and allows a range of communication modules to be fitted to allow for future developments in remote metering.

The meter is a fully MID approved device and can provide functionality over and above that required for generation metering making it suitable for many other applications. Additional functionality includes energy measurement across both import and export.

The overall solution has been designed to minimise installation time and reduce the need for return maintenance visits. An indication of the mobile signal strength is provided on the meter display which allows the installer to leave site confident that the installation is fully operational with a robust communication link.

The multi-network LTE-4G SIM is installed ready for use thus saving time and effort on site.

How do smart meters work via Meteronline?

Smart Meters can be read remotely via a  modem and sim card fitted within the meter . These meters are similar to a normal meter and can be fitted by an electrical contractor. The meters use the mobile phone network to communicate readings within encoded messages, MeterOnline decodes these secure messages and presents the meter readings to its customers. The smart meters are MID (Measurement Instruments Directive) compliant ensuring they are approved for billing and renewables generation purposes.  www.meteronline.co.uk

Are you aware…

UK networks will switch off 2G (2033) and 3G (2025) – older meters will lose connectivity. JW Smartmeters only supplies a full range of LTE‑enabled meters designed to stay online, accurate, and reliable for years to come. Stay ahead of the shutdown — choose LTE (Read more below).

We supply the latest LTE Smart Meters—so you never lose communication with your meters.

Get Ahead of the 2G Sunset

The 3G shutdown is almost complete, and 2G networks are expected to close by 2030. In reality, the transition has already begun.

Mobile network operators are no longer prioritising 2G and are actively restricting access. For example, O2 barred 2G roaming in October 2025, and further limitations are expected to follow.

Over the coming months, operators are likely to announce final 2G shutdown dates, with coverage gradually being withdrawn across the country—commonly referred to as the “2G Sunset.”

What This Means for Smart Meters

Most smart meters over four years old rely on 2G (GSM) communications. As 2G coverage is withdrawn, these meters will stop communicating, leading to data loss, operational issues, and unplanned replacements.

The Solution: LTE Smart Meters

Older meters will need to be replaced with newer LTE-enabled models, supporting 4G, 5G, and beyond.

We strongly recommend that all new installations and replacements use LTE Smart Meters to ensure long-term reliability and continuity.

  • 2G will be over 35 years old by the time it is shut down
  • LTE technology is expected to have a similarly long lifespan
  • LTE meters provide true future-proofing with no further network changes anticipated during their operational life
Protect Your Investment

Don’t wait for network shutdowns to disrupt your operations.
Upgrade to LTE Smart Meters today and ensure reliable connectivity for decades to come.
